What the SPF number actually measures

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and the number tells you how much longer skin protected by sunscreen takes to redden compared to unprotected skin, when exposed to UVB rays. SPF 30, for example, means it theoretically takes 30 times longer for a burn to occur than with no product at all.

That math translates roughly to UVB-blocking percentages: SPF 15 filters about 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 about 97%, and SPF 50 about 98%. The difference between SPF 30 and SPF 50 is smaller than those numbers suggest, which is worth knowing before you pay more for a higher number. No sunscreen blocks 100% of UV radiation, regardless of the SPF stated on the label.

The rating only applies when the product is applied at the tested amount, roughly 2 milligrams per square centimeter of skin, which is more than most people use in practice. Applying less product than that reduces the effective protection significantly, even if the bottle says SPF 50.

Water resistance and what those time limits mean

The FDA does not permit sunscreens sold in the US to claim they are "waterproof" or "sweatproof." Products can only say "water resistant" followed by either 40 minutes or 80 minutes in parentheses. That number tells you how long the product maintains its labeled SPF after water exposure, based on standardized testing.

After swimming or sweating heavily for that amount of time, reapplication is needed to maintain protection. The same applies to towel drying, which physically removes product from the skin. A water-resistant rating does not mean the sunscreen is still working after a full afternoon at the pool without reapplying.
